CDs & DVDs

Different Types of CDs and DVDs
There is several different types of media formats to consider and each difference between the disc type are selected for specific reasons such as recording, storage and even transfer data. CD-R and DVD-R are more commonly used for duplication. Normally, our duplication process uses CD-R & DVD-R disc unless we receive a special request to process a different disc type.

After finalizing a CD-R or DVD-R disc, you cannot edit or record on the disc. Guarantee to prevent any lose of data, music or video providing that the CD is properly cared and stored. View the list of
disc types to determine what would best for your CD/DVD project:

CD-R: (Compact Disc-Recordable) is the most basic type of blank CD/media and can have digital contents written on it once. This disc type is favored by people to duplicate and burn multible discs.

CD-RW: (Compact Disc Rewritable) is a blank CD that allows you to write on it more than once. This type is favored by people who need to transport files or want to share music with a friend.

CD-DA: (Compact Disc-Digital Audio) is the standard CD format used for audio CDs

CD-DAR: is simply a CD-DA disc that allows the user to burn his own music onto it. Again, these are used primarily for music.

CD-DARW: is a version of the CD-DA that allows for multiple rewrites. These discs are popular with serious music buffs and independent producers.

DVD-R: (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R typically has a storage capacity of 4.71 GB. Data on a DVD-R cannot be changed, altered or modified

DVD-RW: (Compact Disc-Rewritable) disc is a rewritable optical disc with storage capacity typically 4.7 GB. Rewritable DVD can be rewritten multiple (1000+) times before needing replacement. The primary advantage of DVD-RW over DVD-R is the ability to erase and rewrite to a DVD-RW disc.

Mini DVD-RW: the smaller disc can holds 1.46 GB, with a diameter of 8 cm

DVD+R: It is a format for data storage that utilizes digital recording. A DVD+R is a write-once optical disc with 4.7 gigabytes (GB) of storage and are suited to applications such as non-volatile data storage, audio, or video

DVD+RW: is a physical format for rewritable DVDs and can hold up to 4.7 GB. It can be recorded and erased multiple (1000+) times. Note however, that reformatting a disc erases all its contents.

DVD-R-DL: Dual-layer recording (sometimes also known as double-layer recording) allows DVD-R and DVD+R discs to store significantly more data—up to 8.5 gigabytes per disc, compared with 4.7 gigabytes for single-layer discs.

• Printable CD and DVD labels are available for all media formats listed above.
• Compact Rewritable Disc may not need duplication but printable labels are available.

Difference Between Duplication And Replication

Often, customers enquiring for the first time are unaware of the difference between DVD/CD Replication and DVD/CD Duplication. The decision on whether to replicate or duplicate your project is generally based on quantity of units required, the acceptable turnaround time and the quality desired.
Duplication: Commonly referred to as “burning”, this is the process of copying the contents of one CD or DVD master to another new pre-existing disc with printable labels to print your image either by inkjet or thermal. This method is best for burn runs of less than 500 or so.

Replication: This is a manufacturing process which replicates or clones the original master. A glass master is made, then a set of moulds or stampers are made from the master. The stampers are then mounted into an injection-mould machine where a replica of the mold is created. The disc is then coated with a layer of aluminium that is very thin and reflective. Finally, a protective lacquer is spun onto the disc and hardened using ultraviolet light. The replication process is typically considered for runs larger than 500.
